Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about Chainage: cost, accuracy, coverage, offline use, accounts, sharing, exporting, plans and payments.

Short answers to the questions we're asked most. Each links to the full article.

General

Is Chainage free?

Yes. Finding chainages is free and doesn't need an account. The free Starter plan lets you save up to 10 projects with 50 MB of photos and files. Paid plans add unlimited projects, more storage and company workspaces. See Plans and what they include.

Which roads are covered?

All of Queensland's state-controlled roads, the roads managed by TMR. Council roads in Sunshine Coast and City of Moreton Bay are included too, with the council's own chainage. Other council roads aren't: tapping one shows the nearest state-controlled road. See Council roads.

How accurate is the chainage?

Within a few metres of TMR's own data. Chainage uses TMR's reference points, about every 10 m along each carriageway, and works out the position between them. Your result also depends on where you tap and on your GPS. Confirm critical chainages against TMR records or on site. See How accurate is Chainage?

Where does the data come from, and how current is it?

The road, chainage and traffic data is TMR open data. Chainage checks for new releases every day and updates automatically. Live speed limits come from OpenStreetMap and heavy-vehicle access from the NHVR. See Where the data comes from.

Does it work without mobile reception?

No. There's no offline mode: looking up chainages and loading the map need an internet connection. In weak reception, results can take a little longer.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge and other modern browsers on phones, tablets and computers. You can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. See Add Chainage to your phone's home screen.

Can I search for a street address?

No. Search finds roads, section numbers, coordinates and Google Maps links, but not addresses or place names. Look the place up in Google Maps and paste its link into Chainage's search. See Search.

Accounts and sharing

Do people I share with need an account?

Not for share links: anyone with the link can open what it includes, entering the password if you set one. People you share a project with by email need a free account. Neither uses a company seat. See What people see when you share.

Is my location stored?

Your location is used to look up the chainage, and only the points you choose to save are kept in your projects. When you're signed in, the places you look up aren't recorded in our usage statistics. When you're not, some locations may be recorded in them anonymously, without your name. See the Privacy Policy and How Chainage keeps your data safe.

Can I export my data?

Yes. Export any project to GeoJSON or CSV from its Settings tab, or download all your personal projects, with photos and files, from Sign-in & security. There's no KML export. See Export a project.

Can I undo a delete?

No. Deleting a point, range, photo, file, layer or project is permanent, and there's no trash. Export anything important before you delete it.

I'm locked out. What do I do?

Use Forgot your password? to reset it, or the unlock link we email after too many wrong passwords. See Sign in, reset your password and stay signed in.

How do I delete my account?

Email support@tekswipe.com.au from your account's email address. Download your data first. See Download your data or delete your account.

Plans and billing

How do seats work on the Business plan?

Every member of the company uses a seat, and so does each pending invitation. People you share a single project with, and anyone opening a share link, aren't members and don't use one. See Company workspaces explained.

Can we pay by invoice?

Yes. Any Business organisation can ask: email support@tekswipe.com.au. Invoices arrive by email with a PDF. See Pay by invoice.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep your plan until the end of the period you've paid for, then move to the Starter limits. Nothing is deleted; anything beyond the free limits becomes read-only. See Cancel or change your plan.

What happens when my storage is full?

New uploads stop until you free up space, upgrade or add a 50 GB storage pack. Nothing is deleted. See Upgrade to Professional and add storage.
